Origins: The 45% Effect
On average, more than half of start-up businesses fail within five years in the United Kingdom. Fewer than two-thirds survive their first three years. These figures are not an anomaly. The Government’s own statistics evidence that, over the past twenty years, the failure rate has rarely shifted more than a couple of per cent. Worse still, business survival is on the decline.
It’s not for lack of effort. Successive Governments have tried in vain to shift this figure by investing in business support. And it’s not for lack of training, as billions have been invested by both Government and private sector. Therefore, it must be the wrong kind of training. If you want to improve your chances then you are going to have to do something different, do something Game Changing.
At the core of the Game Change ethos is simplicity. It gives people the minimum amount of structure needed to unleash the most powerful weapon in any business – enterprise.
In 2015 Business Think was commissioned by the EU Open Innovation pilot to create original learning material to help key people in businesses innovate and be enterprising. We took this as an opportunity to take on the 45% challenge. Video feedback and testimonials from these workshops can be viewed here.
The Game Change program was created as a direct result of working with these 48 businesses.
Audited candidate evaluation confirmed an immediate 80% INCREASE in enterprise and innovation after the Game Change material had been delivered.
Writing the Book
Following the success of the Game Change workshops and candidate feedback, Elliot Forte and Jonathan Sharp (Directors at Business Think) took the decision to codify the learning material and write an enterprise manual for business leaders.
The project was a year in duration and was written in Cornwall and Devon, where the authors live. To illustrate how important the early adopters were to the process, the original presentation slides were used as the book plan and Chapter structure.
The book was finally published and made available on Amazon in March 2016. Feedback has been extremely positive and we were relived to get our first five star review!
“The Game Change book helped me personally to understand I need to be enterprising every day. That in turn will help me as a leader to carve the route and manoeuvre around to achieve the future state which is for our business EPE – £20m by 2020. It also made me structure all meetings with firm agendas by my direct reports. I will definitely refer to this book in the future and even extract pages that I need to hand as challenges come up. I would recommend the Game Change book to any family business owners and Directors that get bogged down in the nitty gritty and need a way to keep their focus.”
